How infrared heat therapy works wonders during reflexology

Ever noticed that lovely warmth radiating from the massage table during your reflexology session, especially on cold, winter days? That’s not just your body relaxing; it’s the Amethyst Biomat doing its thing.

I’ve been using this special heated mat for a couple of years now, and I thought it was about time to share why it’s become such a lovely addition to my treatments – and especially because of the added benefits of this gentle heat therapy.

Let’s explore what the Biomat actually is, why it feels so comforting, and how it helps to ease pain and tension while guiding you into a deeper sense of relaxation.

What is the Amethyst Biomat?

In short: it’s a heated mat, but not just any heated mat. This one is a bit of a gem – and literally. It’s made with 17 layers of natural materials (including amethyst crystals and black tourmaline) and uses far-infrared light to create a gentle, deeply penetrating warmth.

Instead of electric coils or magnets (which some people find a bit too intense), the Biomat uses far-infrared rays to warm up the crystals. Yes, the cosy heat you feel is coming straight from the stones themselves. It’s a lovely, calm kind of warmth that helps release tension and puts your whole body at ease.

Oh, and in case you’re into crystals, amethyst is known for promoting peace and clarity, while black tourmaline is thought to help clear negative energy. Whether you believe in crystal energy or not, it still feels amazing.

A heat therapy without the EMFs

Another reason I love the Biomat is that it’s designed to be virtually free of EMFs (that’s short for electromagnetic frequencies). Pretty much all electric devices give off some EMFs, but the Biomat includes clever copper layers that reduce your exposure. So if you’re someone who’s sensitive to these types of frequencies, you can rest easy – literally.

Why it's not just another heated mat

You’ve probably turned to a heat pack or hot water bottle before to ease aches and pains. They’re great, but the warmth usually only goes skin-deep. Infrared heat is different. It travels deeper – and I’m talking way deeper (up to 15–20 cm below the surface) – and helps with circulation, easing inflammation, and loosening tight muscles from the inside out.

So instead of just warming the surface, this type of heat therapy gently supports your whole body to heal and unwind.

Benefits you can really feel

Having the Biomat on during your reflexology session adds a little extra magic to the whole experience. Here are a few of the lovely things it helps with:

Deeper relaxation – The Biomat’s warmth and negative ions help calm your nervous system and melt away stress.

Muscle and joint relief – The heat works deeply to ease tension, support circulation and reduce inflammation. It’s especially comforting for tired muscles or stiff joints.

A natural energy boost – Improved circulation means more oxygen flowing through your body, which can leave you feeling refreshed and recharged.

Better sleep – Many people find it helps them sleep more soundly afterwards, especially if they’ve been dealing with stress or tension.

A gentle help for arthritis too

The Biomat has even been recognised by the FDA (in the US) as a medical device, especially for easing muscle and joint stiffness, but also for arthritis-related discomfort. It’s that deep, warming heat that really helps get things moving and supports the body’s own healing processes.

Is it safe?

Yes, far-infrared rays are part of the natural light spectrum. It’s the same kind of warmth you feel from sunlight, just without the UV. The mat doesn’t get overly hot, and I always keep it on a low, gentle setting during your session. It’s just enough to feel the benefits without overwhelming your body.

It’s always best to drink plenty of water before and after your session as it helps your body to absorb the benefits and flush out any toxins. It's just the same as what's normally recommended after a reflexology session, or other treatments such as massage or acupuncture.

And if you ever feel like the mat is too warm or want to skip it altogether, just let me know. It’s all about your comfort.

Curious about getting one?

If you’ve fallen in love with that therapeutic warmth and want something similar at home, there are lots of options out there: from small, flexible belts to place directly on areas of discomfort to full-length versions for king-sized beds. If you’re curious, take a look at biomataustralia.com

(Just a heads-up: I’m not selling the mats myself and I don’t get any commission. I just think they are great for therapeutic treatments or for those exploring heat therapy options for self-care at home.)
If you're ever curious about the Biomat or want to give it a go during your session, just let me know. It's a gentle addition to the reflexology and is quietly doing its thing in the background to add a little extra warmth and comfort to your session.
