About reflexology

Reflexology is a non-invasive complementary therapy that supports whole-body healing. With roots in Ancient Egypt and Chinese medicine, it is based on the principle that your feet are a map for all of your body's systems, structures and organs.

Beneficial for the feet and so much more

Reflexology can be hugely beneficial for those experiencing foot pain, numbness or cramping.

But treatments also work on a much deeper level by helping to calm the mind, soothe the nervous system and release tension felt anywhere in the body.

Reflexology is widely recognised for the following benefits:
  • Aiding relaxation
  • Improving mood
  • Helping to release tension
  • Promoting better quality sleep
  • Improving overall wellbeing

Where does reflexology come from?

Wander through a brief history of reflexology, from its expected origins in Ancient Egypt to where it is today as a highly regarded complementary therapy.

Ancient Egypt, 2330 BC

The first evidence pointing to some form of reflexology was found on the walls of a physician's tomb in Sarrara, Egypt, dating back to 2330 BC.

India and China, 100 AD

From Ancient Egypt, it is believed that reflexology spread to India. Some say Buddhist monks then took the practice to China in 100 AD, forming the basis of modern day acupuncture.

Europe, 1582

The theory of reflexology spread with trade between Asia and Europe. In 1582, two European doctors produced the first known book on the topic.

Russia, circa 1910

Russian psychiatrist and neuroscientist, Vladimir Bekhterev, coined the word 'reflexology' after discovering its psychological benefits and the role it can play in brain function.

United States, circa 1917

Reflexology arrived in the States in the early 1900s through the work of Dr William Fitzgerald, an Austrian ear nose and throat specialist. Referred to as zone therapy, Fitzgerald discovered that applying pressure to zones on the feet and hands helped to relieve pain in the corresponding zones.

What we know as reflexology today was pioneerd by the late physiotherapist Eunice Ingham, and her nephew Dwight Byers. Called the Ingham Method, Eunice developed the foot maps and techniques that are still in use today.

1942 onwards

In some countries, particularly the US and UK, reflexology practices have become more recognised within a healthcare setting. The focus of most modern day reflexology is on releasing tension that has been stored within the body, affecting organs, glands and other body parts.
